Looking at our hits counter, we saw that someone had used Google language tools to translate our page into Spanish. Why it is that someone in Spain or Latin America has any interest in what we're saying isn't clear, but nevermind that. Neither of us know Spanish, but some things about the translation looked funny. So Heather decided we should do an experiment. Here's the first paragraphs of the previous post:
Though it doesn't surprise me at all, I feel like I should comment on this ridiculous stuff coming from the right about Ted Kennedy's remarks that we should start removing some of our troops from Iraq. Reading the transcript of Hannity and Colmes on LexisNexis (no link), you find some real whoppers. First, though let's take a look at what Sen. Kennedy said:
Which we asked Google to translate into German:
Obwohl es mich nicht an allen überrascht, glaube ich, wie ich dieses lächerliche Material kommentieren sollte, das vom Recht über Anmerkungen Ted Kennedys kommt, die wir beginnen sollten, einige unserer Truppen vom Irak zu entfernen. Die Abschrift von Hannity und von Colmes auf LexisNexis (keine Verbindung) lesend, finden Sie einige reale whoppers. Zuerst lassen Sie uns einen Blick bei, was Sen. Kennedy zwar nehmen sagte:
And then French:
Bien qu'il ne me surprenne pas dessus tous, je, comme je commente ce matériel ridicule devrais, crois aux remarques viens que nous commençons devrions d'éliminer plus de du droit Tender Eletronic Mail Kennedys quelques-des de nos troupes d'Iraq . lisant la copie des Hannity et des Colmes sur des LexisNexis (pas de relation), vous trouvez quelques vrai whoppers. Vous nous laissez d'abord une vue que Sen. Des Kennedy prennent certes ont dit:
Then back into English. You might enjoy the results:
Although it does not surprise me above all, I, as I comment on this ridiculous material would have, believe in the remarks come that we start should eliminate more of right Tender Eletronic Mail Kennedys some-of our troops from Iraq. reading the copy of Hannity and Colmes on of LexisNexis (not of relation), you find some truth whoppers. You leave us initially a sight that SEN. Of the Kennedy take certainly said:
I really do think we need to eliminate more of those right Tender Electronic Mails.

Does that explain the hilariously inane comments that post generated?

Maybe. Is there a google translator that goes from English into Freeper?

That French translation is atrocious, by the by. Online translation tools just aren't up to the task yet, for the most part. You tend to get a very literal interpretation, highly stilted, and usually following the English word order--which of course isn't the word order the target language would typically use.

I cannot stop laughing. If this is what comes out after only a few passes through a computer, just imagine how we on the left sound to the right once their own internal 'translators' convert everything we say into black-and-white religious terms?
